The Jesus Storybook Bible

We started through this book AGAIN tonight. I love this book. I mean LOVE it. The first chapter alone gets my blood pumping. I got so excited reading it that my voice reflected it and the kids sat still - seriously!

"God wrote 'I love you' - he wrote it in the sky, and on the earth, and under the sea. He wrote his message everywhere!Because God created everything in his world to reflect him like a mirror - to show us what he is like, to help us know him, to make our hearts sing. . .

The Bible is most of all a Story. It's an adventure story about a young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his lost treasure. (Bubba was all ears here) It's a love story about a brave Prince who leaves his palace, his throne - everything - to rescue the one he loves. . . And at the center of the Story, there is a baby (KB says, "baby?"). Every story in the Bible whispers his name."
I love that "Every story in the Bible whispers his name." Beautiful.
Makes me want to read that Bible.
I'm off.

I bought the book after you referred to it in another post and also recently bought a copy for an friend's adoption shower. I just started reading it to the girls this week at breakfast before school. I thought they might find it too "young" for them, but they like listening as much as I am enjoying reading it to them.

We love that one too, although Jordan still prefers The Big Picture Story Bible. And, she only wants to read about Adam and Eve. I mean that literally. So we get to where they are kicked out of the garden and she wants to start over again. We never get to the good stuff haha!

This is definitely our favorite too. Sometimes i get so choked up (especially in the old testament) that i can hardly read it out loud!

Becky, we have ALSO just started reading this book this week after your recommendation on your blog a while back (in the post that is my favourite blog post of all time ever. We LOVE this book. William is actually asking for devotions after two meals of the day now, and the they are captivated by it. I love her writing style and her ability to bring a story to life and frame its meaning and context so beautifully. That bit you quoted from the first chapter thrilled me, too.

Another thing I love is your blog. Fun, real -- like you.

It's also our favorite, but A has mentioned she'd like more pictures...

We're on our second read as well. I think I first heard about it from you, actually.
You know the picture of Jesus on the cross? The close-up? When I first noticed it I was dreading it- so gory. I wanted to spare Liv. I tried to read through it really quickly so we could turn the pg. But when I was done, Liv wanted to go back to it. She just stared at it and then said, "Mom, this is my favorite picture."
I thought, "awww" and "uuugh" simultaneously.
When I asked her why, she said,"Because I think it's important."
And we can never fully know how God is working in the hearts of our little ones, but Brett and I have both noted a deep-rooted change in her spirit, subtly manifested in her everyday reactions and attitudes, since the first read through.
So thanks for pointing me to it. I think it's playing a key role in Olivia's early spiritual journey.
