Bubba's birthday was such a fun day - you could tell he enjoyed just about every moment of the day. So, family and friends, here are some photos your YOUR enjoyment.
We greeted Bubba with a round of Happy Birthday and he held up three fingers to let us know he was quite aware of the day's significance. What a fun way to start off the day with this being the first time he successfully got his fingers to do what he wanted them to in this manner.
Next, a breakfast Bubba would love: scrambled eggs, strawberries, and muffins. He was VERY quiet as he ate EVERY bite using, as you can see, EVERY finger. Made me think of my friend, Carey - anyway, when he was done we heard, "More strawberries, please" and JUMPED to fill his plate. What a gift to US on his big day to hear his voice and know his thoughts.
We opened one gift after breakfast - a floor puzzle. He set to work and had the barn and animals pieced together in no time. He needed a bit of help but not much.
We headed out to a park that was new to us. It was HUGE and such fun. There was a section for little kids and one for big kids. Our 3 year old knew just where to go and headed straight for the steepest slide on the big kid side. I was nervous and a gentleman beside me assured me that it was visually deceiving; the kids actually do slow down at the bottom. I relaxed just in time to see Bubba shoot down the slide, off the end, and flat onto his bum. The man beside me inhaled and awaited screams and tears. Bubba jumped up and yelled, "Again!" through giggles and ran off to repeat the ride. I turned to the guy and simply said, "Nice" and then started laughing. He looked terrified, like I was going to beat him with the diaper bag, or something.
Bubba wasn't really excited about opening presents. We pulled out two more after lunch at Chickfila and he didn't want to rip the paper. Little was more than willing to help him out and once he saw her he decided to give it a try. At the end of the day there were four unopened gifts. As I write this there are still two on the back porch.
Then there was the party. At four o'clock friends began showing up. The thing about having special children is that birthdays look, well, special. We invited two couples to share the cake; two couples that Bubba knows well and loves to death. Too many people and too much noise really overwhelms our little man quickly, so we had folks who would shower him with kisses, hugs, and "hey, man"s (the guys) and then leave him alone *smile*.
They pushed him on the swings, he drank root beer and then we had cake. He listened while we sang and then I looked down to see him leaning in for a big bite. Hilarious. I said his name and he pulled away, but when I looked at Honey to see if he had noticed, Bubba did it again. Dave got the picture that time!
The only selfish thing I wanted out of the day was for Bubba to acknowledge the puzzle theme. When I pulled out his birthday shirt before the party, he smiled so big and said, "Puzzles" and I got a tear. I think it was sweet of God to let me have that little thing.
It was fun to sit and chat. There was one activity - everyone wrote a birthday wish for Bubba on a puzzle piece during the party and we built a puzzle of wishes for him on a poster. At one point, Honey went and pulled out these cool airplanes Memom had left for Bubba on her last visit and he zipped them around the yard for the kids using a rubber band contraption thing.
It was a good time.
Bubba had a GREAT day.
It was obvious.
And everyone fell asleep as their heads hit their pillows that night.
